Speaking vs typing calculator
Put in how much you write each day and how fast you type and speak. The calculator counts the time to fix wrong words too, because a dictation that's fast but wrong isn't faster.
–saved a day
–saved a week
–saved a year (48 weeks)
–faster than typing
How it works
- Typing time is the words you write divided by your typing speed.
- Dictating time is the words divided by your speaking speed, plus the time to fix the words dictation gets wrong: words × error rate × seconds per fix.
- A week counts the days you write. A year counts 48 working weeks.
The starting values are round numbers for you to replace, not measurements. The error rate matters most: in our dictation accuracy test the apps ranged from 7.0% to 25.5% wrong words on the same clips. At 25% wrong words and 2 seconds a fix, you spend longer fixing than speaking.
In a lab study on an iPhone, English speech input was 2.93 times faster than the on-screen keyboard: 153 words a minute against 52 (Ruan, Wobbrock, Liou, Ng and Landay, 2016).
