A habit tracker that gives every habit a time

Caddie is a habit tracker where every habit gets a time on your calendar, because deciding when and where you'll do something makes you far more likely to do it. Habits can repeat on chosen days or several times a day, streaks count only the days a habit is due (a rest day doesn't break one), and a 30-week history shows how it's going. Routines like lunch or the gym hold their time too, so meetings and booking links don't land on them.

How it works

  1. Add a habit. Pick the days, the time and how many sessions a day (three writing sessions, say).
  2. See it on your day. Each session is a block on your calendar, next to tasks and meetings.
  3. Tick it off. On the Mac, the iPhone app or the web; the streak counts due days only.

Why habits get a time

Across 94 studies, deciding when and where you'll do something made people noticeably more likely to follow through (Gollwitzer and Sheeran, 2006). So in Caddie a habit isn't a checkbox floating in a list: it's on your calendar.

Missing a day is fine

On average a daily habit took 66 days to feel automatic, and missing a single day didn't set people back (Lally et al., 2010). Caddie's streaks follow that: change a habit's days and the past is judged by the days it had then.

Tracking helps, written down

Tracking progress helps people reach goals, more so when it's written down (Harkin et al., 2016, 138 studies). Each habit's grid is that record.

Habits versus routines

A habit is a goal you track (read, run). A routine just holds time (lunch, dinner). Neither is a task, so nothing rolls over to tomorrow when you skip it.

Questions people ask

Is there a habit tracker for Mac?

Yes: Caddie runs on the Mac, with habits on your calendar, and syncs to its iPhone app and the web.

Does missing a day reset my streak?

Only on a day the habit was due. Rest days, and changes to which days it runs, are taken into account.

Can a habit happen several times a day?

Yes. Set how many sessions; each gets its block.

Is it free?

Yes, while Caddie is in beta.
