In short

Superwhisper shows that voice dictation can unblock writers who lose flow while typing. One user turned a short walk into about 800 words and found it more accurate than Siri. David Perell says it doubled his words per session, though voice drafts need more editing. Lesson: pitch speed and flow, and expect to support the cleanup step.

From Perell's dictation workflow

What was said about Super Whisper

  • Perell dictates ideas on a walk, then has an LLM outline them. Perell dislikes typing, so he talks through ideas on walks and feeds the transcript to an LLM with a saved prompt that turns it into an outline or clean prose. Using Whisper Flow alongside Superwhisper, a short walk becomes about 800 words, and dictation beat Siri on accuracy.

He then asks the LLM which ideas were most interesting, which stories need more detail and which transitions were unclear. That gives him a version one and a list of gaps for version two. He dictated a team write-up this way, pasted it into Slack, and nobody guessed an AI had done the final pass.

  • Dictating and compressing on each pass doubled Perell's words per session. Perell struggles to find flow while typing, so he paces and uses Superwhisper voice transcription. He starts from one sentence and a rough structure, says the idea aloud, and compresses it on each pass. By the third pass the structure is clear, so he airdrops the text to his computer and types it up. His words per session doubled, at the cost of more editing.

He holds his phone under his mouth like a voice memo so he does not look strange. His framing for the rough voice drafts: "I'm not trying to make a statue, I just need marble."
