GPTZero

An AI detection tool that checks whether text was written by AI, now part of Superhuman.

In short

GPTZero turned a viral weekend project into 19 million users and $30M+ ARR, profitable within 18 months, by starting with teachers and keeping a free scan box on the homepage. TikTok UGC passed 500M views, but a one-off World Cup campaign underperformed. Lesson: pick the users with the most pain, build repeatable channels, and plan for seasonal swings from 150,000 to over a million daily actives.

What was said about GPTZero

1From thesis project to $30M+ ARR

  • Ready research let GPTZero launch within days of ChatGPT's release. Edward Tian had built AI detection models for his Princeton thesis the semester before. After ChatGPT came out in November, he turned them into a web app over winter break at a Toronto cafe. It went viral overnight and crashed under 30,000 users in its first week.

He recruited engineer friends and built in public to keep the momentum. GPTZero reached profitability within 18 months and grew to 19 million users and $30M+ ARR. The drive to find truth online came from earlier work at the BBC tracking AI-generated images, including StyleGAN2 output, during election information campaigns.

  • Buy the .com domain early, even if you don't use it. GPTZero launched on a different domain. The .com was available in January 2023 and later was not.

Edward says venture-scale companies are expected to own the .com, and VCs told him to pass this on to founders. He points to Notion, which took years to migrate to its .com.

2Teachers as the wedge

  • Start with the smaller group that feels the most pain. GPTZero focused first on teachers, whose jobs ChatGPT disrupted before they were ready, and built a suite of tools for them. Teachers shared it with students, and some moved from using it as a checker to putting it in their syllabi and telling students to use it.

Edward compares teachers to eBay's sellers: fewer in number, but serving them builds the network. Students became the much larger share of users. Quizlet saw the same pattern, with teachers driving viral student acquisition as one of its two core flywheels alongside SEO. "The people that felt the most painpoint is always the best place to start."

3The free scan box and the freemium trade-off

  • A free text box on the homepage delivers the magic moment immediately. The first landing page was only a text box and a scan button leading into the web app, and that entry point has stayed free since 2023 while the business grew profitably to $30M+ ARR. Free use also raises time on page, which helps SEO and GEO.

Edward calls freemium a balance still being tuned: free use drives engagement and viral acquisition but can deter conversion. The team runs growth experiments on both sides, and the right upsell moments and products are still being worked out.

4Press built on investigations

  • A full-time investigative engineer made press coverage repeatable. After early media wins, GPTZero hired an engineer to generate investigations and then built a small team around it. Stories on AI-generated outputs at firms like Ernst & Young and Deloitte were picked up by the Financial Times and Bloomberg.

Early on, persistence mattered: when Anderson Cooper's desk said it was full, Edward replied that Fox had booked them in the same slot, and the producer then confirmed an interview. He tries to ride each wave of news momentum.

  • A viral investigation can become a new product and customer base. GPTZero found hallucinated citations in 100 NeurIPS papers. The story topped Hacker News, led to hallucination detection as a product, and won top academic conferences such as ICLR as clients.

Professors apologized publicly. Edward describes the expansion as concentric circles outward from the education text box, later carried further by a Chrome extension.

5SEO and GEO

  • Get listed in 'top 10' listicles to appear in ChatGPT answers. GPTZero ranks consistently near the top when users ask ChatGPT for the best AI detector. The team found GEO engines draw heavily on listicle articles, so they wrote more and got included on more.

Edward credits part of the ranking to luck and a good product before tactics. GPTZero went through six or seven outside SEO agencies before moving the work to a full-time in-house team that builds SEO and backlinks alongside media and growth, since everything is "quite related". He learned much of it by posting an SEO and GEO challenge on LinkedIn that drew hundreds of expert comments.

6The TikTok micro-influencer program

  • About 30 micro-influencers and one manager drove 500M+ TikTok views. GPTZero started UGC by asking a girl from Edward's high school to create content from scratch, then scaled to 10, 20 and 30 creators with one full-time manager. The program passed 500 million views in a year.

Edward learned UGC from edtech friends who made content with students. Milestone-based creator payouts are tested continuously, and larger influencers have been used too. In the last six months GPTZero built a teacher-side UGC program, training teachers to make organic classroom content.

  • Run creator formats for months, not a single event window. A World Cup campaign had creators post rankings of the "most AI" and "least AI" teams from scraped content. It underperformed on virality and consistent posting because the window was too short for creators to ramp up.

Edward thinks a good format lasts longer than 3 months but less than a year, because what works needs refreshing.

  • Rerun proven UGC as paid ads. With Superhuman's paid and PLG experts, GPTZero plans to scale its best creator content with ad budget, linking organic and paid in one cycle.

7Teacher education and the ambassador program

10,000 ambassadors, 900+ peer sessions

From Edward Tian, GPTZero founder interview

  • A six-part course beat one-off webinars and spawned 10,000 ambassadors. Single webinars drew skepticism as sales pitches. A six-part series on being a responsible AI educator, with experts, education journalists and pedagogy specialists, felt like a certification and drew far better attendance; teachers then asked for an ambassador program.

The community lives in two WhatsApp channels, one for higher ed and one for K12. Teachers have run over 900 sessions re-presenting the training deck to peers.

  • Products that change behavior need ongoing education, not a quick demo. The consumer scan must be fast and premium, but asking teachers to rewrite syllabi needs sustained teaching. One skeptical teacher changed her view only after the full series, coming to see detection as one signal in a toolkit rather than a binary verdict.

Edward argues AI writing isn't binary either, since few people write fully alone or fully with AI. Ambassadors carry the training at scale.

8Managing exam-season swings

  • Fight off-season churn with pause plans, surveys and reactivation. Daily actives swing from about 150,000 to a million or more in exam season. GPTZero works both back to school and exam peaks, and in summer uses pause plans, surveys and reactivation moments, and shifts users off manual plans.

Edward finds the cadence useful, with time to push and time to pause.

9Joining Superhuman

  • Superhuman's 40M+ user extension gives GPTZero distribution everywhere people write. The Chrome extension works in Slack, Google Docs and Word, and GPTZero's AI filter now tags AI content on LinkedIn, Twitter and Gmail. Edward calls the effect a "trampoline".

The AI filter was described in GPTZero's seed coverage but built only two or three years later once demand appeared. Superhuman brings 14 years of growth and seasonality experience; GPTZero brings UGC and detection research. Price and terms were not disclosed.

  • Give a merged team a shared identity within the first week. The Superhuman CEO said he wanted one team in the same sweater. Within a week the team voted on a name, SAGE (student authenticity, GPTZero and education), made sweatshirts and held a retreat.

Edward keeps culture alive by repeating the rhythm and giving shoutouts. GPTZero also runs a public channel called 'private DMs', a mistakes channel and a shoutouts channel to cut meetings and keep communication visible.

10Betting on the editing process

  • Build for how writing is edited, not who wrote the draft. Edward argues critical thinking lives in the second, third and fourth drafts. GPTZero is building writing replay, authorship history and chat-history grading so teachers can evaluate the whole process.

"It's not writing that's critical thinking in my view, it's actually that editing process, and the first draft doesn't matter if that's yourself or ChatGPT or Superhuman or Grammarly."
