A Claude variant with one dialed-up feature that steered every answer to the Golden Gate Bridge.
From Dianne Penn, Anthropic
Anthropic turned an interpretability finding into a public product in 24 hours. In early 2024, interpretability researchers found that dialing up one model feature made Claude steer every answer back to the Golden Gate Bridge. Engineering, product, design and research built it into Claude.ai within 24 hours.
In one example, a spaghetti recipe came back with the sauce's orange color tied to the bridge's "international red". Engineers and designers donated their own time to build it, which Dianne Penn describes as typical of Anthropic's bottoms-up culture.
A tiny launch can still prove research can ship as product. Golden Gate Claude reached only about 2,000 people. Penn still calls it a hidden inflection point, because it showed the team it could ship its research as a product.
It came early in what Penn calls Anthropic's search for identity: working out how the technology brings value to users, starting with the Claude.ai chat assistant and moving into tool use.
