From Tony Fadell on deep tech bets

What was said about Recursion

  • Recursion shows the payoff of backing deep technology a decade early. Tony Fadell cites Recursion, which has used AI in drug design for 10 years, as a bet made long before AI became hot. His point is that by the time a market is hot, it is already too late to enter.

His firm looks for deep technology that unseats incumbents by being fundamentally different, not just better on features. Many such bets, like AI plus robotics, took years on product-market fit, marketing and a version 3.0 before taking off. He also says software-only companies are being questioned, while companies combining atoms and software have staying power. Other examples he gives are Simbe Robotics (around 7 to 8 years in), Groq and Cerebras. Quote: "When it's already hot, it's already too late to be in it."
