The bottom line

A painkiller app that solves a real need can earn over $50,000 a month from about 500 daily downloads using only ASO. Because need-to-have apps convert better, you can build a passive business around a niche keyword instead of chasing volume.

Key takeaways

  • Painkiller apps solve a need, so they convert and subscribe at higher rates than vitamin apps. 1:07
    • A painkiller is a need to have and a vitamin is a nice to have, so you need far fewer downloads to pass $50,000.
    • Google Maps, Lyft and Uber are painkillers. Social media, to-do lists and fitness trackers are vitamins that people already have a "good enough" substitute for.
  • Migraine Tracker shows the model works, earning over $50,000 a month from 500 downloads a day. 3:22
    • That is about 15,000 downloads a month. AppFigures showed $55,000 net revenue in March, checked against other ASO tools.
    • The app is simple. It tracks migraines, adds insights and reports, and relies on search rather than ads.
  • Painkiller buyers tolerate a paywall with no trial and a high price. 5:28
    • Migraine Tracker has no trial and still makes $50,000. Steve thinks it could charge less and earn more, or charge more.
    • An AI app launched in 2023 with no trials made close to $2,000 in its first month on ASO alone.
  • You find these niches by searching for keywords with a popularity score of about 30. 10:23
    • In AppFigures, start from a brand name like "migraine buddy" and open related keywords, such as pain tracker, symptom tracker and migraine tracker.
    • A brand name with its own search volume also helps you rank for other keywords.

What we found is if you can get two of those keywords around 30 to rank number one, you got a six-figure business easy. Especially if it's a painkiller.

Chapter summaries

0:00 Painkillers versus vitamins

A need-to-have app is easier to validate and can run as a passive business.

  • Vitamin apps can grow into painkillers over time. 2:47
    • Vitamins reach a wider network but are harder to validate.
    • Great companies often start as vitamins.
    • Uber looked like a vitamin early, because people weren't sure they needed it. Now it is a painkiller.
    • Instagram is arguable, since we're trying to stay closer together is a softer need.
  • Painkiller apps are easy to validate. 3:10
    • You need few downloads to get conversions.
    • Young likes businesses he can leave on passive without thinking about them.
    • A painkiller solves an unmet need. A vitamin only improves an existing solution.
    • Vitamins make us feel better. Painkillers like Advil heal pain, so people in pain buy.

3:22 Inside the Migraine Tracker app

Even a working painkiller app loses users at signup, and small changes can fix that.

  • The signup screen is where most users drop off. 4:19
    • Painkiller users may sign up anyway, because they need the problem solved.
    • Young suggests bigger buttons: continue with Apple, Facebook or Google.
    • Changing "sign up with Apple" to "continue with Apple" gave an 11% conversion increase in his tests.
    • He would ask for notifications and location before the signup wall.
  • Install to paywall view is the number one metric. 5:14
    • A big drop before the paywall view must be fixed first.
    • Most apps he works with lose many users on the signup page.
    • Best practice says a trial raises conversions.
    • Showing what the app helps with before signup can reduce the drop-off.

5:38 Tracker apps pair well with AI

Tracking builds data, and AI turns that data into insights people will pay for.

  • Tracker apps are a good base for AI features. 6:18
    • Each entry adds data that AI can sort into useful insights.
    • The app has insights, track, records and reports tabs.
    • Steve says I love these tracker apps now, because AI parses the data well.
    • The reports icon is unclear, though it suits reports better than other icons.

6:58 How feedback requests get answered

Friendly wording and real rewards get more feedback, and live calls get the best insight.

  • Softer wording makes people more willing to respond. 7:09
    • Migraine Tracker's menu says encourage us instead of "rate us".
    • Steve taps it more readily, though he has no data on this.
    • The "love us" button goes straight to reviews.
    • "Support us" opens a web view with a feedback email, and its label is unclear.
  • A niche reward plus a call beats a form. 8:16
    • The Rubik's cube solver 21 Moves offers a free cube or a $30 gift card for feedback.
    • Calls reveal why people downloaded the app.
    • Tone matters, since Steve says 80% of communication is non-verbal.
    • He prefers qualitative data early on, over feedback forms.

9:38 Finding your own ratio

You can search for the next painkiller niche by starting from one keyword and widening it.

  • Start from one keyword and expand with related ones. 9:50
    • Any keyword works as a start, or you can ask ChatGPT for common words that include "tracker".
    • Related keywords in AppFigures show the popularity of each.
    • Steve says to look for ratios like 15,000 downloads for over $50,000 a month.
    • A score of 28 or 29 is still good.

In the growth library

Steve P. Young, Founder of App Masters (app growth and ASO agency). Painkiller apps that solve a need-to-have problem convert far better than nice-to-have vitamin apps, so a niche tracker can earn big money from modest ASO-driven traffic. Migraine Buddy makes over $50,000 a month from about 500 downloads a day, around 15,000 downloads a month, with no trial on its paywall.

Coming up, I'm going to show you a simple app that is in a very interesting niche that is also making $50,000. $550,000 a month. Stay tuned. What is up, app nation? It is Steve P. young, founder of appmasters.com, and I really wanted to create this video to show you that there is still space in the app business for you to make really decent money relying just on ASO. And it's a topic I've been talking about a lot recently is I like to build a painkiller versus a vitamin. And that's what this app is. It's a painkiller for a particular niche. And I'm going to break down what I really mean by painkiller versus vitamin and also how you can find these great niches that have a great business model and you don't need to really do anything. It's very very passive income. So without further ado, let's get started. Here is the painkiller. Now when you have painkiller versus vitamin and this is shout out to a medium article that I

1:13

found on this painkiller is a need to have. vitamin is a nice to have and it's that simple. What you're going to find with painkillers is that because it's a need to have, you're going [snorts] to get higher subscriptions. You're going to get higher conversions. So, you don't need a lot of downloads to make over $50,000. Number two, solves unmet customer needs. Now, this is already improves an existing solution, right? We take vitamins to feel better. We take painkillers like Advil and some of these painkillers to essentially heal our pain. And so if we're in pain, we're more likely to buy, right? You want to use, you should use. So here's some examples. Obviously, Google Maps, Lift, and Uber. If you think about that, it's really a painkiller because it's saving us time and getting us from one place to another. And then you can see vitamins as like social media apps, to-do list apps, fitness trackers. You know, these

2:05

are things that we're already doing probably. and we just want a better solution. So, harder to convince these people because it's like maybe my solution is good enough and I don't want to pay you. Whereas these Google Maps, you know, as I'm old enough to do Map Quest, like Google Maps solves a real real problem, right? I'm going to break it down even a little bit more with the pros and cons. So, here's a slide about vitamins. I won't break it down. You guys can take a screenshot, but it kind of talks about the pros and cons.

2:32

vitamins obviously you can get a wider network and then cons harder to validate right you had Facebook you have Instagram you have Uber in a way that was a vitamin but now is a painkiller but you know maybe in the very beginning it's very hard and the great companies start off as vitamins and then become painkillers right you can make a case that Instagram's not a painkiller we're trying to stay closer together you can definitely make a case that Uber was just a vitamin in the very beginning because people weren't sure what we needed Now, it's like definitely a painkiller, right? So, I'll let you take a screenshot if you want to look through the pros and cons of Vitamin. Here's the painkiller. What I really love about it is really easy to validate. You don't need that many downloads to get the conversions. That's why I like it because I like businesses that I can leave on passive and I don't have to

3:20

think about it. All right, so are you ready for the app? It's getting only 500. Now, I know for some that may seem a lot of downloads, but it's only getting 500 downloads a day. For some that's a lot, for some that's a little. and it's making over $50,000. What an amazing ratio. That's 50 over 15,000 downloads. All right, here it is. The app is called Migraine Tracker. Thanks to my friends at App Figures for providing me with the tools that I need to really break down some of these things for you guys. So, you can see very accurate. I double checked with a couple of different ASO tools. 55,000 net revenues in March and then 15,000 here as well. Stay till the very end.

4:00

I'm going to show you how to find keywords related to this niche or other keywords related to other niches. All right, but App Figures has a very accurate tool when it comes to net revenues right here. Cool. So, let's break down the app and I'm going to show you like the simplicity of the app and what they could be doing better, too. So, migrating button, if you're watching, don't watch this, actually. All right, stop right here. All right, you have a sign up button. Look, most people, this is where most people are going to drop off. Now for painkillers, maybe they won't drop off because obviously I need to solve this problem.

4:33

So they might sign up. What I would suggest is change this to continue to migraine buddy. Make these into bigger buttons like or sign up with and then put continue with Apple, continue with Facebook, continue with Google. You should see we saw an 11% conversion rate when we changed signed up or sign in versus continue with Apple. So instead of sign up with Apple, we did continue with Apple and we saw an 11% increase in conversions. Same thing. Notifications, great, no problem. Where am I located?

5:03

Now, if I were them, I might try to do notifications and location and what you can help with before I make them sign up because most apps that we work with, they get a big drop off on the signup page, right? And the number one metric you got to be looking for is install to paywall view. So if you're getting a big drop off before your payw wall view, you need to fix that problem. All right, sharing is caring. Would you like to do I forget what I put here. Then the payw wall. Now listen, this is what I'm talking about and this is why I really want to highlight this app. This payw wall has no stinking trial. I know some of the best practices are to have a trial. It will increase conversions, but sometimes you can get away with that. We launched an AI app in 2023 with no trials in any of the subscription plans.

5:47

We're able to make $1,600. That's close to $2,000 within the first month just using ASO with no trials. So, it can work and it can work for apps that are painkillers. And you can see this app's making $50,000 charging these purchases. They could be charging a lot less, too, and probably making more. Or they can figure out the pricing, but you can see they can charge a lot more or a painkiller. You can. So, that's what this app does. I'm going to hit continue. I hit X. I didn't buy. I see the home screen. Now I'm going through some of the insights for you. So this is the insights obviously as you keep tracking and this is where you can add AI onto these tracker apps. I love these tracker apps now. Okay, I really do because as people are tracking now you have the data and AI is really great at using that data and sparsing it and giving good insights on it. So you got insights here and then you have I think

6:37

what I tapped on right here was track, right? So that's what it's tracking. I tracked it a couple of times and then you have your records. this little icon and then you have this reports tab right here too. The icons aren't as I don't know. I didn't know this was a reports icon, but I think this is more indicative of reports. But anyways, it's neither here or there. Now, I do want to focus on this. There's an interesting way that they're doing feedback. So, back to the homepage. If you tap on the hamburger menu, you'll go to this. If you go there, encourage us. And I was like, that's interesting. I never saw an encourage us before, right? So I was like, "All right, let me check it out."

7:17

So when I tapped on encourage us, they're like, "Hey, would you like to rate us?" I'm like, "Huh, now I kind of like this, right?" Instead of rate us or support us, which they are huing here, they were like, "Hey, encourage us." And I was more prone, this is I have no data on this. I was more prone to tap on encourage us because why not? Why don't you want to encourage other people, right? So this popup I really like. And then if you hit love us, they take you straight into the reviews, which is interesting because it went straight into the reviews part. So that's an interesting l link that we got to figure out. And then support us took them to like feedback. So I think they could do better with this cuz I had no idea what I was going to expect with support us.

7:57

But you know, this is this might I might just change to give feedback versus and love us. But anyways, I thought this was interesting. This is a web view. You can see it goes to a website where there's an email that people can reach out to for this. Now, I want to show you one more example of an app doing feedback phenomenally well. All right, here we go. This I had this guest, Nico, on he's got a great app called 21 moves. But anyways, it's a Rubik's cube solver and on his homepage he says give feedback gives you a free reward. Now, for niche app again, this Rubik's cube solver, he's giving away a really awesome Rubik's cube as a reward. Love it. Hit next. What age group? Cool. Get that information. What age group? Get a reward. We'll send you the cube or $30, right? He's like, "Look, this cube, I guess people know that are in the Rubik's cube." And so, we'll send you a cube or the $30 gift card. What do you

8:52

want? And when you hit schedule call, I like calls better because for me, qualitative data, especially in the beginning, way better than quantitive data because I like to talk to people. That's just my personality, too. But I like to talk to them, understand what they're thinking, understand why they download the app, and you can hear the subtle nuances. So, I'm a big fan of tone, right? By the way, 80% of communication, non-verbal, doesn't matter which words you use. So, I'm really paying attention to tone. Are they excited about a feature? Paying attention to tone. Are they me about a certain feature? And that's what qualitative data and getting on calls with people are going to give you that type of insight, not these feedback forms. All right, great app making over $50,000 a month with just 15,000 downloads. I love those type of ratios.

9:45

All right, go find those ratios. All right, lastly, if you made it to the end, here's how I'll show you. So, I put in migraine buddy here. I put that in. Now, you can put any keyword. You can just start with my grain eggs example, right? Or you can go to chat GPT and say like what are some common words that people would search for that includes the word tracker as well. Right? So I put in my grade but buddy with then app figures. You can see the popularity score. So it helps to have a brand name that has search volume too and it helps to rank for certain keywords as well. So and then you can go to related keywords and this is how you find different keywords. Pain tracker, right? Symptom tracker, migraine tracker. And your job is to find a keyword with at least around 30 search traffic. 28, 29, good, right? But 30. And what we found is if you can get two of those keywords around 30 to rank number one, you got a

10:35

six-figure business easy. Especially if it's a painkiller. All right, that is it. Hope you enjoy this video. Leave a comment below. Let me know what you thought. What was your biggest takeaway?
