The bottom line

In the launch phase, a new app should raise AdMob eCPM by testing ad formats and placements, and should skip mediation and multiple ad calls. Small audiences give ad networks too little data, and retention and clean traffic matter more than early revenue.

Key takeaways

  • Retention and clean traffic come before revenue in the launch phase. 2:07
    • Early apps attract invalid traffic, and ads are a main cause of AdMob limits, so the app must stay policy compliant.
    • Firebase is free, works with AdMob, and shows retention, the metric to stabilize first.
  • Testing one placement of each of the four formats shows which one fits the app. 8:38
    • The four formats are banner, interstitial, native and rewarded, and each drives a different kind of revenue and experience.
    • An adaptive banner can beat a standard banner on eCPM because it can show video and native ads, so split the audience 50/50 to check.
  • Ad format updates give new apps a better way to earn than banned tricks. 4:58
    • Enter and exit interstitials now break policy, so app open ads, shown when users open or return to the app, replace them and have a high CPM.
    • A photo app can put a watermark on saved files and offer a rewarded video to remove it.
  • Placement tests protect the user experience while they raise revenue. 6:12
    • Users complain about ads in reviews and suffer banner blindness, so test top and bottom banners and an interstitial after every two clicks.
    • An interstitial at game start annoys players who want to play, so end the game with the ad instead.
  • Mediation and multiple ad calls should wait until the app has a larger audience. 7:37
    • With about 10,000 ad requests a day (a rough figure), networks have too little data to learn what the audience responds to.
    • No other network clearly beats AdMob on scale or eCPM at this stage, and frequent updates make early mediation less useful.

Don't look at mediation. Don't look at multiple calls. Just focus on format, just focused on placements.

Chapter summaries

0:00 What the launch phase is and what comes first

In the launch phase the app is still changing, so the first job is keeping users, not earning from ads.

  • Launch means the idea is in the market and the app keeps changing. 1:23
    • The team talks to users and learns what works and what doesn't. 1:40
    • Two signs of this phase are many new feature releases and constant bug-fix updates. 1:47
    • The series splits an app's life into launch, growth and maturity, and this part covers launch only. 0:32
    • The example app gets only a handful of downloads a day. 1:13
  • Ads come after the user relationship is built. 2:07
    • The app first has to hold users with its features. 2:15
    • Ads start only once retention is in place and the app is fully policy compliant. 2:46
    • The first step is Firebase, which gives the core metrics. 3:01
    • Retention should be stable across the whole user base. 3:19

3:24 Strategy one: test ad formats

Formats are an understated lever, and each one should be judged on what it brings.

  • AdMob has upgraded its formats a lot in the last two years. 3:44
    • The banner, the oldest format, was upgraded twice, from a smart banner with fixed height to an adaptive banner with fixed aspect ratio. 3:57
    • More new formats are expected. 3:49
    • Different devices have different aspect ratios, which left wide empty space around the old banner. 4:10
    • The adaptive banner adjusts on each device and fills the screen space. 4:23
  • Interstitials are worth rechecking, because the old habits are gone. 5:04
    • Enter and exit interstitials were a very common developer habit. 5:04
    • Google built the app open format so developers can still earn. 5:12
    • Check whether your app has room to use app open ads. 5:34
    • Adding it is a test, and the result shows whether it fits the app. 5:34

5:38 Rewarded video and placement tests

Rewarded video suits apps as well as games, and each audience needs its own placement tests.

  • Rewarded video is not only for games. 5:38
    • Games have an obvious logic for it, but other apps can use it too.
    • Premium filters in a photo app can be unlocked by watching a video instead of paying.
    • The speaker calls it an intuitive way to raise ad revenue.
  • Ads are a top user complaint, so placement needs care. 6:12
    • A study of top apps found ads among the biggest complaints in reviews.
    • Users are more aware of ads, so they expect a better experience.
    • Read what users say in reviews and build the ad experience around it.
    • Test every placement for each audience, because results differ.
  • Formats and placements also keep traffic clean. 7:16
    • Good tests lower the chance of invalid clicks and invalid activity.

7:32 Skip mediation, test each format

Mediation is a later strategy for apps with a user history, and the launch phase is for learning what each format does.

  • Mediation needs an app with a history of users. 7:32
    • Networks need a lot of audience and time to learn which ads people respond to.
    • The 10,000 requests figure is not exact. The point is a small user base.
    • Mediation is an extended strategy. Part two covers the growth phase, where it may start.
  • Each format changes the experience differently. 8:38
    • An interstitial is a full page ad that breaks up the experience.
    • Banners become part of the experience.
    • Native ads work best in content apps with flowing screens.
    • Banners work for many kinds of apps, so have one at launch.
    • Rewarded ads give users a reward in return.

In the growth library

Sid (AppBroda) with Steve P Young, Sid, ad monetization expert at AppBroda; Steve P Young, founder of App Masters. Teaches how to approach AdMob in an app's launch phase: focus on testing ad formats and placements, and skip mediation and multiple ad calls until the app has a real user base. The practical payoff is a simple launch checklist that protects retention and avoids invalid traffic flags while still finding what earns.

What is up app nation? It is Steve P young founder of Appmasters.com the place you go when you want action back content related to helping you grow your app downloads, and more importantly, those revenues. And when I say those revenues, I really mean it because we've got part one of our YouTube series where we're gonna break down all the things that you needed to, to increase your ad mob ECPM and we're gonna break it down into different phases of the app.

0:27

So whether you're in the. Phase you're in the launch phase or the maturity phase. I should say that backwards launch growth or maturity. And in this part, one, we're gonna talk all about launch phase. What are the things you need to do to increase your ad mob? E C P M and joining me for this entire series, because I don't know that much about ad mob is Sid from app Broda. They are the company that's gonna really help you increase those ad revenues.

0:56

So go check 'em out. It is app broda.com. Also linked up into the YouTube description. Sid welcome. Hey Steve, how are you? I'm good. My friend, let's break it down. So you have the floor of my friend. Where do we start? We just launched a nap. It is out there. Maybe we're getting a handful of downloads every day, but where do we go from here? Help me make more money. Sid. Showman and that's where we are for. Right. uh, so let's, let's sort of break it down a little further, right?

1:26

When you talk about launch, what does that mean? Right. if you look at, uh, from a behavioral standpoint, launch means you've built an idea. You've built on an idea. You've launched it in the market, and now you're getting some downloads. Talking to your users. You're trying to figure out what's working. What's not working a couple of ways to identify, and to understand if you're in the launch phase, is first, you'll have a lot of new feature releases that you're going to be talking about.

1:52

You're going to launch new features, test out on the market, get feedback. the second thing is you'll have a lot of updates because you'll have bugs issues that you'll keep on launching right now in this, uh, sort of scenario, especially in the launch phase, we actually really recommend you to. Look at, uh, add revenues in the first place. Don't look at revenues, right? Because the most important thing in the launch phase is actually building a relationship with your client, right?

2:17

You build a functionality and you really want your user to stay in the app. Right? So retention becomes a primary primary objective that you're looking at. Now another reason why you should stay away from monetization in the early phase of your launch is because, uh, this is also the time where, uh, a lot of cases of invalid traffic come in your app and, uh, to ensure that you have to make sure your apps supremely clean and ad is one of the main reasons why, uh, your a limit comes in place.

2:46

So again, try and stay away from it as much as you. But if you've got your app figured out, you've got your retention in place, your completely policy compliant. Great. Then let's talk about step one. Now the first thing, and I'm sure you would've already done it. If not, we definitely recommend you start integrating fire base. Why? Because it helps you understand a lot of core metrics. It's a free tool, man. There's no harm integrating and it's a Google supported product.

3:11

It seamlessly integrates with AMO, but it gives you very, very core features, right? Again, like I said, retention is the primary metric that you should be looking. Uh, build a very strong, foundational, uh, retention that's stable across your. Now, so strategy number one is formats. Uh, formats is an extremely understated, uh, optimization strategy, but I think it's the best optimization strategy you look at when you're in the launch phase.

3:37

Um, when you're looking at formats, you sort of evaluate each format and what it brings to you. Right. Uh, you've more with the recent two years has actually done a lot in terms of formats. They've upgraded their formats massively and they keep on they've kept on doing it over the years. And we hope to see a lot of new formats going in place to give you an example. Banner, the oldest format in the industry actually had an upgrade twice.

4:01

The first is a smart banner where the height was fixed. Then they've upgraded from a smart banner to an adaptive. Where the aspect ratio is fixed. Now, the reason why they've done is that banner because of different aspect ratios, because of different devices, there's a lot of wide space that comes across. So because of that, they've actually upgraded to an adapted banner where your aspect ratio is fixed. And with each device, it automatically adjusts and takes up the screen space.

4:26

The other reason, and this is something that we've noticed internally is that an adaptive banner also takes up more. Uh, if you look at an adaptive banner format, you can see, it's not a static image. You do get video ads in it as well. And you've got a lot of native ads, so it's always understood that it might increase an ECPM. So a good test to do is to run a banner placement and an adapt banner, split an audience 50 50 and understand how it works.

4:51

It might be that in some cases, banner is doing better. In some cases, adaptive might do banner. So understand that audience into it better. Now, the other thing, and another very important format is inters. Right in an interstitial. And, uh, this is, again, a very, very common thing that developers do is, is an enter or an exit interstitial. Now, an enter and exit interstitial now are both banned. It does not work policy violation straight, but to sort of ensure that you still make money through it.

5:19

Google has launched a new format called app. The app open format is designed in such a way that every time the user comes to the app or leaves the app and returns to the app, you can show an app open app, and this has actually proved to be a very high CPM format. So look into it, understand if you've got opportunities to do it right. Reported video without a doubt games, have an obvious logic to do it, but even apps can do it.

5:42

Let me give you an example. Now, a lot of times, uh, photo editing apps have the option to actually. Uh, maybe show newer, maybe have premium, uh, versions of their formats that they can show, uh, filters right now, instead of actually putting it under, uh, payable, you can actually put a watermark and to save that file and to remove the watermark, you can launch an I, uh, launch a rewarded video. That's another very intuitive way that you can drive up your ad revenue.

6:10

The second strategy is place. Now placement again is an extremely important thing you should look at because users go through banner blindness users get irritated with the amount of a experiences, right? Uh, we've been doing this study where a lot of top apps that we go through. One of the biggest, uh, things that users complain about are ads, right? The users now getting more aware of how it comes. So he needs a better right.

6:35

Experie. So listen to him carefully, understand what they're saying in the reviews and build a better, a experience. Do an test, look at bottom placements, top placements, uh, interstitial after every two clicks. Another thing that, uh, you sort of should be aware about, uh, when you, when you're putting an interstitial a for example, in a placement and you are, uh, in the, you are a game and you are launch. The start of the game.

6:59

Now, as soon as you launch the game, there is an interstitial, that's a really, really irritating experience for a user because he's actually expecting to start playing the game. That's what he's clicked on. So try and make sure you end the game with an interstitial, but again, these are strategies you have to test out for each of your audiences. Understand. So two strategies that work really well in the launch phase are formats and interst, supremely, helpful.

7:22

Supremely useful also ensures that you don't have no chances. Uh, resulting in invalid clicks or invalid active. So please focus on that, try and do that. Uh, two things you should definitely not do in the launch phase mediation and multiple calls. Very strong reasons for it. Uh, you realize on the launch phase, you'll have small audiences. There's no right number, but let's assume you have a 10,000. Ad requests a day now, uh, in Google's ecosystem or any ad networks ecosystem, those audiences are really small, right?

7:51

They need a considerable amount of audience, a considerable amount of time to study your audiences to understand what kind of ads they're reacting to. And if you look at any ad network in the market, I'm sure you will not be able to say that any ad network is better than ad more in terms of either scale or ECPM in the. In the launch phase, make sure don't look at mediation. Don't look at multiple calls. Just focus on format, just focused on placements.

8:13

That's about it. That's our recomme. I love it said, Hey, are there types of formats and placements that you recommend that we have, whether it's an app open format that we should think about? I know it's a new format that Google just launched or banners, like definitely have banners, cuz it works for multiple apps. As a matter if it's a game or non-game are there different formats and placements. So you're like, On launch phase, you should definitely have these ones.

8:38

Oh, I think in the launch phase, uh, banner becomes, I think you should try each format one placement. So try an interstitial placement, try a banner placement, try a rewarded placement, keep one, one placement each and understand how it actually works in a app because each placement drives very different kinds of revenue and has a very, very different experience. Interstitial is a full page ad, which breaks up your experiences.

9:02

Banners are ads which become a part of your experiences. Native also, for example, is usually works in content apps where you have flowing screens and rewarded is always, as you know, is a reward. So I would recommend try all four formats, keep one, one variation of each and see if it's working in your user base and your app. I love it. Anything else you want to cover in the launch phase? I think we are good. Don't focus on too much.

9:29

Focus on attention. I loved it. I loved the, the takeaway with the mediation, cuz that is one of the questions I get asked the most is like, Hey, how much media should we go after mediation? What do you recommend? And you said, look, if you're going under 10,000 requests, correct me, if I'm wrong, said 10,000 requests per day, then don't worry about mediation. Don't quote me on the 10,000 ad requests. But again, the ideas is really small, really small.

9:57

Uh, the idea is small, a. Small user base. And the idea is, again, during the launch phase, don't focus on the ques, but figure, because you're going to be doing a lot of updates, then don't do mediation. Don't do mediation because that's an extended strategy. Your app has to have in history of users before you get into mediation. Ah, I love it. Okay. Once again, it is@broda.com at broda.com. They're gonna really. What I really love, actually.

10:23

Lemme tell you this. What I really love is they're gonna help you analyze your app. They're gonna make suggestions on placements on formats, and then they're gonna really tap you into the Google at X. Ecosystem and inventory so that you can increase your E CMS. If you don't believe me, go check out the website. You'll see a lot of case studies on there. So once again, it is app broda.com and join us for our next video in part two, where we're gonna talk about your growth phase.

10:51

Maybe Sid, maybe we start thinking about mediation here. What do you think? Maybe that doubt. Without a doubt happen in that window. all right. Make sure you tune in, say subscribe to this particular channel and join us for part two, where we're really gonna break down the growth phase of your app. And how do you increase your ad mob? ECPM all right, so next time I'll see you on the next video.
