The bottom line

An app wins downloads by being named for who its users want to become and by targeting what they already search for. Men rarely search for romance tips, so the app must be found through outside-the-box keywords.

Key takeaways

  • A name should describe who the user wants to become. 1:36
    • Nobody wants to be a caveman, and the app ranks low when searched by that name.
    • The fix is to keep the old name and add the new one: caveman to Romeo 13:35.
  • Keywords should come from what men already look for, not only romance. 5:27
    • Men's brands such as GQ, Esquire and Playboy have high traffic and tend to have lower difficulty than romance terms.
    • Men are lazy about seeking relationship help, so they must stumble on the app while looking for something else 18:29.
  • High-traffic keywords belong in the app name, and trademark terms can hide in a Spanish Mexico localization. 12:26
    • The app name carries the most weight, and lower-traffic keywords go in the keywords field.
    • Apple reviewers may remove that localization if it holds only English keywords, and Steve has not yet confirmed the trick works.
  • A free app with banner ads can earn more than a paid app. 6:54
    • Banner ads are the number two ad unit for revenue, and users of a tips app return every day.
    • A paid app can still use rewarded video, where users watch an ad to unlock more content 20:30.
  • Short free promotions and price drops drive downloads once a few reviews exist. 18:45
    • Bots automatically cover big price drops, such as $4 down to $1, and post them on deal sites.
    • One developer changes his paid app's price every week, from $2.99 to $1.99, to keep downloads coming.

All your high traffic keywords you want in the app name, the lower competition lower traffic keywords you put into the keywords field.

Chapter summaries

0:00 The app and its name

Caveman is a paid app of 365 romantic tips for men, and a tap-first layout holds it back as much as its name.

  • The app gives a man one romantic tip for every day of the year. 0:42
    • Anna built it for men who don't know how to do romance.
    • Steve bought it and opened tip number one.
    • The name comes from her husband, whom she has always called a caveman.
    • A sample tip: offer to help her when she looks tired or irritated.
  • The tip screen hides its content behind a tap. 2:51
    • Steve suggests a "tap to see" label, or showing the tip on the first screen.
    • Anna can't, because her app builder, Goodbarber, forces a title page before the content box.
    • The title field has few characters, so "tap to see" is all that fits.
    • She has asked Goodbarber many times, and this is the only way it works.

4:45 Improving the app

Borrowed cover art and a level system would keep men opening the app long after launch.

  • The cover art can borrow from bestselling pickup books. 6:37
    • Steve suggests checking which pickup books on Amazon have the most traction, and what graphics they use.
    • A rose, or any image that says "suave", tells men they can win the woman of their dreams.
    • Steve sees himself as the user: a goofy, funny man who could be more romantic.
  • Goodbarber forces a choice between all free with ads and paid with none. 8:11
    • It allows no in-app purchases, which is why Anna made the app paid.
    • The app is easy to build, like Steve's first flashcard app made from sample code.
    • He thinks the builder's limits cost her income.
  • Levels would keep men coming back past the launch phase. 9:31
    • Guys are competitive, so the 365 days can be split into chunks of 7 or 10 days.
    • Users climb from complete caveman to monkey, and on to Romeo status at day 365.
    • Checkmarks would mark each finished level.
    • Anna says this means a whole new app, so it is a down-the-road idea.

11:16 Where the keywords go

Brand names like Playboy are trademarks, so they are safer in other countries' stores than in the US one.

  • Brand keywords are risky in the US store. 11:47
    • Anna asks whether they belong in the description or the 100-character keyword field.
    • Steve pulls the data on Sensor Tower, which allows unlimited keywords. He prefers Mobile Action.
    • The UK or Australia stores may be more lenient than the US.
    • In the US, Playboy would likely find out and object to the trademark use.

13:18 Name, subtitle and price

Search ranking comes from the name and keywords, and a paid app has room to raise its price and fund search ads.

  • The iOS 11 subtitle is already indexed, so it is a new place for keywords. 14:40
    • It is a new line under the app name, like Google Play's short description.
    • Apple indexes it before iOS 11 ships.
    • The description may or may not count on iOS 11, so Steve barely touches it.
    • Name and keyword changes alone have brought his success.
    • Google Play is far weaker for this developer, with almost no downloads.
  • A higher price makes Apple Search Ads affordable. 15:28
    • Paying $1 per download works if each sale earns at least $1.
    • The name could grow into a chain like caveman to Romeo to playboy.
    • Steve suggests simply testing a higher price.

16:06 Cheap development and ad mediation

A simple app can be built for about a thousand dollars, and ad mediators find the best-paying ads.

  • A freelance developer can build the app for a one-time fee. 16:06
    • It should not cost more than about $1,000.
    • The developer in the call was quoted about $570 up front, with fees only for updates.
  • An ad mediator picks the best-performing ads to show. 16:59
    • Steve names Tapdaq, Tapjoy and MoPub as mediation platforms, and says he is no expert.
    • On Google Play he would use AdMob.
    • A banner ad in a paid app would annoy users.
  • Growth comes from trial and error. 17:31
    • Keep testing different things and see what works.

21:43 Getting the first reviews

A few real reviews unlock the free promotion, and friends are the safest source.

  • Friends and family are the safest source of early reviews. 21:43
    • The app had two five-star reviews on Google Play and none on Apple.
    • Bought reviews are possible, but Apple is catching on to them.
    • The developer had never asked anyone, not even her husband.

23:00 Learning to code with Corona SDK

Corona SDK is an easy way for a beginner to build the app and ship it on both stores.

  • Sample code makes Corona easy to learn. 23:00
    • It needs some coding, but it is not drag and drop.
    • Steve built his first app from its slideshow sample, which suits a slide-based app.
    • He found it easier than Objective-C, and has a little HTML and PHP background.
  • Rebuilding the app keeps its existing downloads. 24:55
    • Apple and users see the same app, only on a different code base.
    • Her 280 downloads stay.
    • Steve compares it to a domain name that stays the same when the website platform changes.

coming up is a coaching call I did where you will discover how to name your app to highlight your apps benefits outside the box 8's Oh strategies and using popular Amazon books for app icon inspiration stay tuned hello Anna how are you I'm fantastic Steve how are you I'm good so tell me about caveman and then we'll get into some of the questions you have for me okay so it's an app that gives them 365 tips for men on how to be romantic and show their love for their woman it helps men who really don't know how to how to do the romance thing done I am that target market love it okay they're going to 65 every day I can do something romantic for mine for my wife absolutely okay why call it room why'd you call it caveman um because you know the Neanderthal man the man who really you know it's not a man of words who doesn't know how to be the modern aged man which is the showing of the love so I I just

1:25

you know all those kind of men came and I've always called those have been cavemen my husband a caveman it just kind of like stuck okay cool so before we get into questions much my note my feedback would be that seems like a hard term and when I search for it you're not appearing that high and then also nobody wants to be a cave it we're gonna be a Romeo right so maybe kind of like switching I'm kind of doing some research as we talk is Romeo a better word because you know like we want to become this person so are we I would probably term it with what we want to become rather than you know it's like calling somebody same discipline Oh a loser you know like it's not that extreme but it's like I don't know I want to be winner like I want to be strong so I rather be strong rather than a weak person the great tip that's the first thing I would do so I bought the app - paid app really cool let me tip number one no medicine no

2:31

game how do I access real means just tap into it okay Cap'n shut tough again offer to help her with something if she if you see she is tired or irritated okay I love it okay like this so from a UI perspective I didn't think to tap but you know I'll Benchley get there but maybe just maybe it's for the tip one maybe underneath it because you know you're dominating the screen with the tip one which looks beautiful either show it right because there's just little words in there or say tap to see it right okay I like yeah I mean are they long the tips along and because I use good Baba and where it has to have that first page which I asked them if I can get around not having that page but it has to have a title page and then go into the content and I can put tap to see but I can't put the whole thing inside there okay I'm laughing because I he'll win under sex tip number one you know why cuz i

3:46

sticked overfunded i did it and my husband actually said maybe start a little bit salsa I didn't know it I didn't know if you went for me those were her uh yeah that's good laugh so I would just I love the design of this I think it's a really well-designed I would just put the tip here personally then I could just scroll through like not do it can't do it what I can't do it because it doesn't let me put in the it's a title and then I have to put the content in another box and the title doesn't have that many characters so I can put tab see II I know I already I already asked with Barbour you know many times about that method that's the only way it can be done okay so there there a no I mean okay well it were some limitations okay cool so what are you doing right what are you doing wrong how do I approve free versa ok let's go through some of the questions so I think what are you doing right well design I love the tips in

4:56

there really funny as well so I think you're doing that right wrong wise you know I might improve the app in terms of the changing the name and then use an ASO to figure it out so like come up with Romeo like other things suave something that men want to inspire them I inspire somebody like me I'm more of a goof funny man I could probably make my wife's laugh but you know I could probably tend to be a little bit more romantic at times and then from an ASO perspective wanted to give you that thing will be beneficials being through different things that men might look for like men tells GQ that is outside of just relationships so you know I think that's how we've become really good at it so is we think just not like directly related to the app but also somewhat related to the app so mental Gigi you maybe even playboy or Esquire see if those keywords have one I'm big should have high traffic and two

5:58

they tend to have lower difficulties if you start thinking through that right so that's what I would also look at too is what other keywords you can target besides just obviously relationship tips and romance advice because those are pretty competitive as well and then rename it I would rename the app with that like from a Nikon perspective to I know you have the C and then X and M for caveman I'm assuming but like a rose or like something that shows men that like they're suave and then they can have you know the women of their dreams something like that data what I would look at I might even look at like pick up tips on Amazon see what kind of books have the most traction and what kind of graphics are designed they have to see it's like it says you can borrow some things from them from awesome be free with you know I do like everything is free better because you can just drive more downloads that way you actually would

6:59

probably make more money this type of app because you have the people that are in it I'm assuming you have a stat that they'll be in it that might look every day you can monetize a lot more a lot better with ads because once you suck a guy in there you can then say like you know like hey okay my mind is getting a little bit too far ahead but because I'm in there like I'm always going to I'll see the ads so you'll actually make money from banner ads one of the biggest things that I've learned from interviewing all the people on the podcast is ketchapp and other people have said Oh banner ads are really well-liked there's number two you know Kat told me number two ad unit that performs the best from a revenue perspective our banner ads so for an app like this where people will stay in the app for a longer period of time you can't monetize better through ads and then obviously you can pay to remove

7:58

ads or you can pay for this will tell you nicely with what my I was thinking with like day let's take day seven seven tips are free well fine okay oh yeah you do that Baba no in-app purchases that under them yes okay annoying and that's why I made it paid because it's either going to be all free and then just the ad revenue or pay it and then there's no ads inside it but then that's one pay and then you get all the tips in there to this where I'm a bit confused what would be the best way to go okay get a get a get a program I can make the S again yeah you didn't read my mind being part of it because I always do that because it's such an easy app to build right the coding is very easy on this type of that so it's like it reminds you of the first app that I build using sample code because it was just a flashcard app and then being able to go in here then you're into the flashcard right and then you're just

9:08

swiping you just wiping your swiping so it's like it's it's very easy from a technical perspective to build this app so yeah like good barber we're not making them you say a lot cooler ana but we're not give you a greatest plug but you know like it's very limited and I think you can monetize a lot better with ads in here and then what I would say from a monetization usability perspective would be to put different levels for guys guys are very competitive they like that crap and so be like okay day one to seven for instance or you can break it up to 30 day 10 day chunks whatever you want to build it up but say look here is you know you're a complete caveman right now and then here is I don't know your monkey then now your caveman and then all the way up to certain levels so you encourage that certain levels and I think it would be interesting like affirm usability perspective once I'm into the romance phase oh is it a star

10:12

meaning I did it have a thing sighs I'm favorites you can add them to your favorite okay so I think that favorite but then help like if we go if we gamify this a little bit I then say a check market so I accomplish certain levels then that get me into Romeo status with day 365 or whatever once I hit that level I get I hit vote me off status so that's what I would do for that let's see what else getting come to mine um that would all require two data basically a whole new app kind of in a way I mean these are like down the road things I think yeah right now I asked you about down the road that was another one of those equation like okay how do you keep it up going you know for more than just one year or the launch phase and then it just dies off and you know so that would be keep it going build it up make it more of a game or competitive like you said you have much fun yep yep now with with the keywords that you

11:19

mentioned about like things like playboy GQ Esquire men's magazine kind of work would they go in the description or would they be part of like for the Apple Apple keywords as in just 100 of the characters that you get the spaces great question so the way we hack this is I'm going to pull the data for you just on sensor tower I'm prefer to use mobile action but sensor tower allows me to have unlimited keywords when I'm doing these separate searches so GQ for example Playboy okay to answer your question because their trademark terms you got to be careful right so to get around it is to use the advanced a so strategies that are shared where you hide certain things into the Spanish Mexico localization or maybe even your based in Australia like maybe there will be more lenient by putting in the UK or Australia look like if you put playboy and all that stuff maybe they'll let it go whereas us you probably likely

12:17

cannot put all that stuff in there because playboy will find out and then be like hey you're using a trademark term you can't use this in your app so the way to hide it app name has the most weight but the way to hide it is to put it into the Spanish Mexico localization and the way I would do it is put in for just testing this so what I found is that depends on the reviewer Apple starting to come down remove the Spanish Mexico localization if all you have are English keywords so they're just like so now you're letting you go through with it so the way I've gotten I'm trying to get around with it I haven't shared this publicly because I don't know if it works yet it's put Spanish keywords in there and then put playboy right so like hey blah blah blah in there as in in the keywords in the app name in the app name that's going to give you the biggest weight right because if I've I hit yet I'm landing

13:17

this as well okay so yeah I have the most weight the app name so put in the app name so let's say you come up with you stick with caveman or you call it Romeo it'd be Romeo okay Romeo I'm sorry I'm thinking caveman to Romeo okay great one caveman - Romeo that's perfect the name caveman we're gonna add the Romeo yeah and a cow is a 5-game this couch the 5 8 K that's a really popular so caveman to Romeo love it so caveman to Romeo and then relationship tips or whatever that is in Spanish then put it like or like to become a playboy right like you know I mean like you could because you're in ravaging Playboy now you're like oh you know Romeo to Cape to K man to Romeo to playboy right like okay what am I doing wrong like it that makes sense right so I'll play around with that I try to do it that way and then salt so definitely all your high traffic keywords you want in the app name the lower competition

14:21

lower traffic keywords you put it into the keywords field then iOS app description maybe it comes into play on iOS 11 maybe it doesn't right now by just changing the app name and keywords we've been able to find our success that's how we've been able to I don't even touch the description that much the thing that you got to know to Anna is for iOS 11 subtitle is coming into play and that is actually being indexed by Apple right now so you before even iOS Elevens out they're already starting to index the subtext subtitle what does that mean subtitle is a new feature a new line in in Apple that they just added so kind of like Google Play has a short description but it's supported a short description Google Play I'm going to ask you that very soon yes okay but oh you're on Google Play as well okay I am but I'm getting like almost no downloads I'm Google Play Apple is much much stronger yeah thank

15:21

you you have this oh yeah there's that okay cool man sustain wise you know like because you're paid right now so something that would test is maybe even increasing the price just test it right because and then running Apple search ads on this because then you can say look I can pay $1 per download because I know I'm making a dollar regardless so by charging a little bit more you then give you you have more flexibility on Apple search ads - okay then all that

16:06

works then I would probably like find a quick program I mean you shouldn't shouldn't be more than like a thousand bucks to get this done so simple so okay what's worth looking into because I'm going to every I'm going to be paying about five hundred and seventy dollars for the goodbye Buffy oh really uh-huh so you pay a program based a tip and you do the one sphere you do that front fee and then you don't pay anymore apart from updates yeah which sucks too but yeah yeah I like it I'm that yeah I don't know what else I would I would do okay what's cool that's been really helpful now with ads would you do Google AdWords is that the best one to use for ads because I've never built into ads there's some ad BD I'm not an expert on this by any means so there's some mediation platforms out there I know tap DAC is one then I'm familiar with tap and then bak I believe and then mo pub is another one so I would say definitely

17:16

use a mediate mediator because they'll just find you the best performing ones to show and then Google Play you'd have to use Google Play that's where I would use AdMob I think is the Google Play one so yeah but none so basically um all old really it is is that just trial and error keep on trying keep on poking different buttons pursue two different things trying different things and see what works that's basically what you'd recommend pretty much I mean what I would do with ASL I think you got you know the device I gave was you guys solid strategy I think you can leverage some of the men brands out there and see if they have good traffic like for example like think too like all out-of-the-box type of keywords acts you know anything that is targeting men exacts is like a deodorant that I use but not the action yeah no but you know like that might be a little bit more in terms of traffic what I'm looking at is

18:19

pretty competitive but think through all that it's that's outside of just relationship tips because I don't know if men or man like I don't know if we're looking for relationships it's like we're freakin lazy in that regard and so you almost want to focus on things that we might be looking for and then we stumble upon - caveman - Romeo - go what's this like that's interesting let me check that out type of thing okay and then all the other thing is you can run the page of free strategy the only thing that you don't have right now is you need a few reviews to run this campaign but that will drive downloads for you and yeah an advanced trick is to play around with the price drops from like $4 - all the way to $1 because there are bots out there that automatically cover these huge price drop campaigns and so I know somebody who he said share this on the podcast but he does is almost every week he just

19:17

wrote a program to change the price every week to just drive download and it's a paid app and what he does is you know changes it's $2.99 every Wednesday it drops to $1.99 every Thursday and then he just gets some downloads a little bit of pain but I might try for a couple of weeks see how it performs I'm and I would probably create like 99 and then drop it tonight to $1 so on your worst-performing downloads they change it to a really high price and a couple of days later just change it back to $1 and then these bots will automatically pick up on this price change and then cover you on certain sites certain sites it just it's just a bot that covers it all so you don't have to pitch them they just cover it okay now golden rule is with a paid app not unless you can remove them or do do paid off still have a defense just is that a golden rule and apps but if you have a paid app you can't have ads

20:12

in them no I wouldn't say that but that would annoy would that lend knowing people in your experience I would I'll be annoyed if you had a banner ad and I paid for your app and I mean you're showing me that around I'd be a little bit annoyed by that yeah but you know like there Purtzer you can always do reward a video that's considered an ad for I know some paid apps do have that and so there certain paid apps have what a paid I packed that all sorry rewarded video so that's essentially like you finish it use you get something in return for watching the video okay and what would you get like more content so for ubi 1 to 24 is free or a dollar but to get 25 and whatever you have to either pay a dollar or watch this quick video ad and then that unlocks the next level and then so forth so you gue if you want to go this route you can go paid with in-app purchases for not ads necessay but for more

21:14

content and certain people to do that I can't was it ok cool well I just finished my own three day I've gone free campaign without actually I emailed Tyler from F advice and he didn't get back to me you don't have rehab that's the thing I have two five-star reviews on Google Play but not on Apple yeah you need some reviews on I'll leave you one up laughs but thank you you need some so what I what I typically tell clients is make it free for a couple of days just a couple days I'll tell anybody and then just get some friends today hey can I buy can I can't get some reviews can I read you can buy some reviews but apples catching on to them and so I would just big way yeah well that's I can even done that I haven't asked even even my husband you know no one's written a review for me so so I having an asset and I realized you know people always up ok subscribe to my channel write a review like my Pinot and I haven't done

22:14

any of that you know so that's you know one thing that I should really get onto to make my friends the people who I know aboard write a review yes get them to write a review that that will help out and entirely will eventually cover it cool okay fantastic cool Milton that's it sweep I not think of right now I really like you know everything that you said is really amazing and things I haven't even thought of so it's all completely new so I'm going to have to really sit down study all of these things and and see what I can do and you know hopefully in what for a program or two of the future I don't think I'll be able to learn how to code in the next you know two months I don't know can I send you the resources this is what I would use Corona SDK are you okay with like web stuff as in when lay up javascript HTML CSS do you know any that stuff thank you all right okay no Corona will be easy to

23:18

use hey I made my app I've made lots of Wix website so I can learn it if I just know how to learn it you know it's like if I get the tools to learn I I can learn they think I'll actually really enjoy it I've made lots of websites and things like that but using non coding so I guess I just have to learn the codes and the technique and I couldn't easily do it it was the easiest one for me to I have a little bit of background in HTML and PHP and all that stuff but like objective-c all that stuff went over my head but Corona was the one that I was like oh I get this and it was really easy for me to use and I use the sample code they have this slide show sample code that would be perfect for your app like this is it reminds me of the first app that I built because it's just like slide slide slide slide slide and that's all you can do is make it really slide slide slide so that that that app builder is really easy you do have to

24:11

code it so it's not this drag-and-drop thing but you do have to learn how to code a little bit but it's pretty easy so I would just say grab a sample code learn from that sample code and that's what I do my first app use that sample code modify it and it's a lot easier to get it out into the Apple Store and it's cross / it's cross platform you can get out on both app source but I was I would lose all of my my people would neither people nor democratize no you just add it on you would lose I'm sorry so saying it you lose what what I will lose the people who have already like I've been I've had my apps for about I'd say now for months so for five months so would I lose like the 280 downloads that I've got no because you're essentially it's the same app from an Apple perspective and from a user perspective it's just a different code base different code base okay so you would submit yeah it's the

25:11

same at when Apple came out okay I told you I'm very very beginner in the M in the world of app making it's like a domain right think about our domain like wwm I can't change it from WordPress to something else and still have WV calm whatever okay fantastic Steve thank you so much I really appreciate this up Xfinity I you know thank you so much for helping me out and I hope that I'm going to see this cuz I need to get the the video again so I go back a thousand times over and listen again I've made some notes but I want to watch this again so I really from the bottom I heart thank you so much for I'm reading why my letter and I'm taking me up on the on the other absolutely any any time let me know I got yet to meet your deck and can you play can you post it on weapons I don't know I will and I'm all stop is Corona SDK thing tomorrow okay I'm actually Brazil I'm not in Australia I'm in Brazil oh no

26:14

way yes so that's why it's nighttime here and not morning my husband's Brazilian so I'm visiting the his family we've been here the last two months oh that's awesome that's only being the holiday like yeah so so tomorrow start learning some coding cool yeah well thank you again
