The bottom line

Studying competitors' keywords, rankings and in-app purchases in a tool like Checkaso shows which keywords drive their downloads. You can then copy the ones that fit your app and fill the gaps in your own metadata.

Key takeaways

  • A competitor's titles and subtitles show the keywords it targets, in every localization the store indexes. 2:04
    • The US App Store indexes the Spanish (Mexico) localization too, so Zero uses a different name and subtitle there.
    • Zero's Mexico title adds "fasting tracker" and "keto diet intermittent fasting", where its US title had "fasting and health tracker".
  • Ranking data shows how optimized and how visible a rival really is. 3:37
    • Zero's ASO index is 8.0 and its search visibility is 90.5%. The speaker's own app is optimized but has little visibility, so it needs marketing.
    • Without any keywords added, the tool shows Zero is number one for 108 keywords and in the top five for 180.
  • Rivals' keywords and the tool's suggestions become your own keyword list. 5:42
    • The Ideas tab suggests welcome keywords and competitor brand names to track, such as "simple fasting app".
    • Entering a competitor's app shows the keywords it ranks for, without typing them in first.
  • Search volume and the number of competing apps decide which keywords are worth taking. 8:05
    • He wants a search volume of 30 or more, or at least 20.
    • A keyword with fewer than 100 apps can still be worth it even if its difficulty score is high. Branded keywords look like low competition but are not.
  • In-app purchases can rank in App Store search, and almost no one has managed it. 9:52
    • Life's in-app purchase is number three for "life" and ranks in the top five for 23 keywords, including number five for "fasting".
    • None of Zero's, Simple's or Fasting's in-app purchases are indexed. The basics are an icon and keywords in the purchase description.

Doing competitor analysis can really show you what your competitors are doing.

Chapter summaries

0:00 Why start with competitors

Studying rivals early shows what works before you spend time guessing keywords.

  • Competitor analysis matters most when you are just starting ASO. 0:26
    • It shows what rivals are doing.
    • It points to the keywords that likely convert best.
    • The free plan gives one app and no keywords, so you can only test the tool.
    • Paid plans have a seven-day trial with no credit card, and he suggests the startup plan.
    • Zero is the benchmark: over 300,000 reviews, 4.8 stars, number 58 in Health and Fitness.

2:50 Measuring a rival's keyword strength

Keyword overlap and tracked rankings show how well a rival owns its space.

  • Strong keyword overlap with your biggest rivals means your keywords are working. 2:50
    • The tool suggests competitors on its own when you add an app.
    • Zero overlaps with Simple on keywords.
    • You can enter your own competitors instead.
    • Another fasting app he covered earned about $200,000 a month, and it was already listed.
  • Rank tracking only works once you add keywords. 4:26
    • He added keywords from Zero's US and Mexico titles and subtitles by hand.
    • Zero's top keywords fell from 117 on June 3rd to 105.
    • Half of the keywords he entered rank number one.
    • One sits at 11 to 20.
    • He found the tool's own suggestions too generic.

5:42 Finding the keywords you are missing

Keywords you don't index but rivals do mark gaps in your metadata.

  • The non-indexed list shows keywords worth adding to your metadata. 6:26
    • It lists keywords you don't index at all, which rivals may index.
    • Zero has few high-traffic gaps, mainly simple.
    • Simple is so generic that people may be searching for something else.
    • Lose weight in 30 days looked like a useful gap.
    • Other ASO tools make you type keywords in first, but this one lists what already ranks.

7:33 Choosing keywords from the suggestions

Suggested keywords are only a shortlist, and each one is judged by fit, search volume and number of competing apps.

  • Take only the suggestions that fit your app. 8:24
    • Water tracker makes no sense for Zero, but food tracking might.
    • Simple goes on the list because it is a competitor brand.
    • Tools beat staring at a blank screen, which is how keyword brainstorming usually feels.
    • The list can be sorted by search volume or by total apps.
  • The total number of apps stands in for difficulty. 8:43
    • A difficulty score is coming in a future release.
    • Sorting by total apps gives a quick read on how crowded each keyword is.
    • Many "low competition" keywords are branded, such as NuMe weight loss.
    • They can still be worth targeting, because few apps show up for them.

9:52 Competitors' in-app purchases that rank

A rival's ranking in-app purchase shows exactly which searches it wins, and few apps have managed one.

  • Pick a rival and check whether its purchases appear in App Store search. 10:19
    • Simple is the biggest competitor, and none of its purchases rank.
    • Life's intermittent fasting purchase does rank, right behind the Life app itself.
    • Zero's list has many duplicates, maybe from tests of features or promotions.
    • How to get a purchase indexed is the question he hears most. A later video will cover how he has done it for clients.
  • One purchase can win many different searches. 11:57
    • Life's monthly trial ranks number nine for "intermittent fasting" and number seven for "fasting tracker".
    • Sorted by rank, it is number two for "life intermittent fasting".
    • "Life fasting tracker" has a search volume of 34, and the purchase is number two there.
  • The ranking purchase is cheap and covers a wide keyword set. 13:38
    • It costs $2.99 a month, and the price history shows no changes.
    • It ranks for 81 keywords in total.
    • 42 of them are in the top 10, and 4 are between 11 and 20.
    • An earlier snapshot showed 31 keywords in the top five.
  • Big apps need competitor intel aimed at keywords that move the needle. 14:28
    • Big clients skip low-competition keywords and look for the big ones.
    • Studying rivals shows how to improve your own app.

Coming up. I'm going to show you the best ASO tool that you can use to do competitor analysis and mine. Some good keywords stay tuned. What is up app nation? It is Steve P. Young founder of AppMasters.com the place you go when you want action packed content related to helping you go yet downloads and your revenues today, I'm going to show you an ASO tool that allows you to really do some competitor analysis, right? This is especially important when you're just starting to do a S O because doing competitor analysis can really show you what your competitors are doing, right.

0:35

And also help you find the keywords that are probably best converting for. So without further ado, let's get to it. All right, guys, the tool I'm going to be using today is showing off is check ASO, it's check aso.io. I have done a product preview product overview of the tool already. So I'm gonna link that into the card right here, but for now I want to show you some of the new features and their competitive analysis.

1:00

So I'm gonna show you some pricing details real quick, just so you understand how it all works. You can get started for free. So it comes with one app, no keywords, and you're going to need the keywords in here, but you can try to test it out. And then all of these plans come with a seven-day free trial, no credit card needed. And so you can get some competitive analysis, but I would recommend probably the startup plan to.

1:25

With, and then move on to all these other plans. If you do need it, if you do need more, all right. Let's get into the tool. So I've added a couple of different apps in here. I've added zero because it's my favorite intermittent, fast enough. It's an app I use every single day. And then my, one of my apps. As well, just to give you guys a sense of what's the difference between the two and I want it to be zero because it's a pretty big app out there.

1:48

Meaning a lot of downloads, they've got over 300,000 reviews, 4.8, it's ranked number 58 in the health and fitness. And Kevin Rose actually started making this at first. And so I'm a really big fan of his love, their screenshots, but I added some other keywords. And guess what guys, if we're going to do some competitive analysis here, so this is the U S app store. Okay. MX four, done this homework for you guys. And this is the Spanish Mexico.

2:11

So for those who are just starting out with ESO, you know, that the U S app store indexes the Spanish, Mexico localization. And so here's what I'm checking and you can see they're doing a really good job. They've got a completely different app name. They still have zero, but they got fasting tracker now. And then they have keto diet intermittent fasting, which before in the U S. Was fasting and health tracker. So they're going after really competitive high traffic keywords here in the U S and then some other different keywords in the Spanish, Mexico.

2:42

And that's what I like to do too, is mix up the us title and subtitle that is going to be different from the U S title and subtitle. All right, let's get into the tool. So I'm going to go here. I'm gonna start off with zero, cause I want to really. Really highlight some of the benefits of check ASO. So, first thing first, I love this section right here, keyword intersection, the, when I first added zero check ASO, put some different competitors, so you can put your own, but they came up with different competitors.

3:08

Now how fast it is in here. I think this is faster. Let's see. Yeah. Fantastic. So I did a video on fasting and I was like, Hey, this intermittent fasting app, I think it was making $200,000 a month. And so it's already in here, but you can see the keyword intersect. And so you can see that zero intersects with simple intermittent fasting from a keyword perspective. That's fine. And so if you're doing a good job and some of your top competitors are listed and you really have a good keyword intersection with your biggest competitors, then you're doing a really good job.

3:37

So the next thing I want to show you guys is this ASO index they're doing really well. There's an 8.0 my episode. Pretty well. Shashi. I know he is so, but their visibility is huge. So 90.5%, whereas my visibility isn't that great. So the ASO index is great for telling you how well optimized you are from an ASO perspective, but the search visibility is like, all right, but you're not, you know, I'm optimized. My Moulin app is optimized, but it's.

4:02

Getting any type of visibility. So I have to invest them in some marketing. I'm going to create a video series on that, but for now Xero's doing a really good job. So one more thing I wanted to highlight is the total keywords. So I haven't added any keywords check. ASO is telling us that there's 108 keywords. That we're number one for we're, there's 180 keywords and top five and so forth. So really, really cool. Right.

4:23

So let's go into the ASO right now. I clicked on here. Now you want to add some keywords because you, I want to show you some features. That would not work unless you added some keywords. So let's do that. And here's what I'm doing based off of what I see in their title and their subtitle and in their Spanish, Mexico title and subtitle, I'm going to add those particular keywords in here. So I'm going to click add manually.

4:44

All right. Here are the keywords that I saw in the title, subtitle, all that jazz. And I'm going to add it here. So check ASO also was recommending a few keywords. I think this is a little bit too generic, but I'm going to add these ones because they're the most important keywords. These are the keywords I see in their title and subtitle. All right. Now here's the key part. Again, we saw this distribution in the other screen, but I really like it.

5:07

Right. You can see how well your app is doing in terms of the top keywords. And you can see from previous dates. And so it looks like they're trending down a little bit because previously on June 3rd, they had 117 and now they only have 105. And then you can even just see alright of the keywords that I just inputted, which one are we doing? Number one. And which one are the top five and which one are we and so forth.

5:29

And so you can see that right. There's one keyword we're in 11 to 20. And then most of the keywords I inputted, I am putting it about 10 in there. And so most of the keywords, 50% of the keywords were number one, four. So that's a really good job, zero. So the next thing I want to show you guys is this ideas tab. So you can click this and this is a brand. Feature for check ASO. So welcome keywords. These are usually the keywords that check ASO is recommending that you should be trying to index for.

5:56

And so you can add these into your keywords. If you can't think of any, they're sort of recommending this here's the competitor welcome keywords. So I really like this, right? Like it's based off of obviously their brand names. Fantastic. You got, do fasting another competitor, simple fasting app, another competitor. And. All potential keywords that you might be wanting to track and keep an eye on. And so I'm going to sort of add these in here as well.

6:22

Intermittent fasting free is a free yet. Now another section I really, really love. And we're going to get to it a little bit here in the proposed keywords, but this non index keywords. So these are keywords that you're not index at all for. And these could be keywords that your competitors, our index for. So you want to just see the list and zero is doing a really good job. So I don't see too many keywords that are high traffic except simple, but simple is such a generic term that people could be searching for the simple fasting app.

6:53

Right. There might be searching for something else. Right. But lose weight in 30 days might be interesting losing weight. So these are keywords that could potentially, you could use within your metadata and you might be missing out on. Right. So I like this. Cool. Here are the keywords you're ranking number one, top five, four. So really good job here. Right. Top five, lazy. And then here are the keywords you're ranking the six, 10.

7:19

I really love that you can. See what keywords are ranking well for, cause all the other ESO tools you're going to have to input those keywords and app Annie, I showed you guys another tool that will also highlight some of these keywords limits. It so only shows you maybe the top two. You know, some of the keywords that you're ranking the top 10 and nothing else, but let's say I was simple fasting nap, and I want to do some competitor analysis.

7:44

I might put zero app in here and then look at their data. So it goes vice versa. Whether you're doing you're inputting your own app, or you input one of your competitors app and let check ASO kind of give you a peak. Into which keywords they're really ranking really well for. Right. So it's a great way to competitive analysis. All right, guys, let's take a look at these proposed keywords. Now I personally love using tools to come up with keyword ideas because a lot of times it is.

8:15

Just like staring at a billing screen. I'm like, I don't know. Right. And I'm showing you a couple of different tools that allow you to do that. But this is what I love too. It's just like, boom, easy. You can then pick the ones that you want to go after. So water tracker doesn't make sense for them, but food tracking. Might make sense for zero fitness coach. Interesting. Simple. Let's put that in there because it's a competitor body.

8:40

Good. That's the cool thing I like about this. You see the keyword and you see the search volume, right? And then you see the number of apps, so they don't have the difficult. It is coming up in a, for future release. But at the same time, the, the total apps give you some type of indication on competitiveness. And even if a tool tells me the difficulty score is high, but there's, let's say less than a hundred apps that show up for a particular keyword.

9:06

I might still go after that particular keyword. All right. So. The rest look good. And then you can also sort, yeah, this is sorted by search volume, but let's say I wanted to go by total claps. Let me see if I can see. Yeah. So here are the total apps and this gives you sort of some indication on the difficulty of keyword. Now search volume five. I want to stick around search volume 30 and up personally, or a least 20 and up.

9:31

And so as you can see a lot of them. Low competition keywords. I'm putting those in quotes. They are branded keywords. So nuMe, weight loss, branded Brandon, Brandon, that, but again, these might be particular keywords that you want to go after, because not a lot of apps are showing up for those particular keywords. So the last new feature that I want to show you guys of check ASO, is this. Section it's brand new. Again, if you want a full product overview, check out that previous video and you can watch this video if you want, but I'm going to show you exactly.

10:04

What's so cool about it. So here are all the in-app purchases. That zero has now a lot of them are duplicates. Maybe they're testing out a couple of different features or promotions in here as well. So you might see all of this where you want to do is pick one of your competitors. So here's what I'm going to do. I'm going to pick simple, since it seems to be the biggest competitor, it doesn't look like anything is. Any of their in-app purchases are ranked.

10:28

So I'm going to pick this one right here, life intermittent fasting. You can click show in out, and this one is ranked. So when you search for life in the app store, this is actually number three. I believe I'm looking at, out on the app store. Yeah. So life, life. Yeah. It's number three. So number two is the app itself. And number three is this in-app purchase. And now this is what you can be doing, and this is what you should be doing now.

10:53

There's, we're going to get into details on how to get an in-app purchase indexed by the app store, but the very least you should be adding this icon, promoting your in-app purchases. And the way to do that is by adding an icon and an also having some keywords. In the description of your in-app purchase and okay, another video to show you guys how to do this, how we've done it for other clients, but that's one thing that you should be doing and you can see which ones of your competitors have in app purchases that are being indexed.

11:27

It's a really great tool because that's the number one question I get asked all the time is how do I get one of my in efforts? This is index by apple. Now we're going to answer that in another. But here you can see which competitors have their in-app purchases indexed. So here is where this in-app purchase this life in that purchase. Now let me just see, this is a, it looks like it's, it's the monthly trial. So this in-app purchase is ranking number five for fasting, which is crazy.

12:03

Number nine for intermittent fasting number seven for fasting tracker. Do fasting fast. So you can see where, which keywords this in-app purchase. It's not just the app itself, this in-app purchase is being ranked for it. And I really, really, really liked that. Right. And so let me see if I can just find life just through yeah. So, let me see here, let's do this. So I love this, right. I'm going to go by sort by rank go the other way.

12:31

Give me the top rank. Okay. So life app, it's number two, obviously after the app itself life, if number two, life intermittent fasting number two, and you can see the search volume with some of this, the life fasting, 13 ounce, getting their life fasting tracker 34, number two. So really, really cool tool. I get asked all the time about this particular feature. So unfortunately, or fortunately for zero. So unfortunately none of their in-app purchases for zero are actually being index.

13:06

It doesn't look like for a lot of their competitors of being addict. So here, Nope, life we already looked at let's look at sunrise, see if they have there's some but none promoted. And then fasting does not have any, either. Nor does simple, so good job life. I don't know how they've been able to achieve it, frankly. I've been trying to figure this out, but this in-app purchase. It's doing really, really well. You can see the details.

13:33

Yeah. The pricing history. So if they'd done that, any changes, Nope. It looks like it's still 2 99 a month. Super cheap, by the way. And then you can see the keyword distribution here. So. 31 keywords that they're in the top five for, which is amazing for it in our purchase. And then, oh, here today. As of this recording, they have 23 in the top five. Or two to five, because number one is the life app itself and then 81 different keywords here.

14:04

And so you can see show keywords and it'll show all the keywords today as well. So 23 and the top 5 42 and the top 10, four from 11 to 20 and so forth. Right. And you can see all the keywords right here. All right guys. That's it. Pretty insightful for you. It's a great way to really think through what your competitors are doing right. And how you can improve your app, especially this is true for these bigger apps and these bigger clients that we work with.

14:31

We want to really look at the Intel of their competitors. Cause they're always focused on that, right? It's not like, Hmm, what are some low competition keywords that we can go after? It's really, what are the big keywords that are going to move the needle? Because that's what the big clients really are looking for. Moving the needle. Once again, the tool is called check ASO, check, eso.io, go check them out. And if you do sign up for them or schedule a demo, let them know you heard it on this very YouTube channel in that masters sent them your way.

15:01

All right, till next time, I'll see you on the next video.
