The bottom line

Million-dollar apps still gain from ASO, because small conversion gains add installs that paid ads would otherwise cost money to buy. The most overlooked levers are getting featured and optimizing promoted in-app purchases.

Key takeaways

  • A small conversion lift adds a large number of installs at scale. 3:33
    • With 1 million impressions a day and 5% conversion, an app gets 50,000 installs a day. A 5% relative lift adds about 2,500 a day, roughly 75,000 a month and almost 1 million a year.
    • At $2 to $3 per paid install, 3,000 extra organic installs a month save $6,000 to $9,000 a month.
  • Hard numbers are what convince a manager that ASO is worth it. 4:26
    • Run a full audit of the page and store metrics, and collect success stories from similar competitors.
    • If you can decide yourself, just start optimizing. Visible progress ends the questions.
  • Getting featured is the most overlooked lever for big apps. 6:55
    • Apply through the store's form. A real update, localization and new store features such as dark mode or live ops events improve the odds.
    • A story feature on Apple can start showing for new keywords as you adjust your ASO.
  • A feature brings a flood of traffic, so prepare for the drop in conversion and ratings. 8:49
    • Check server load, store guidelines and app stability. Submit the update for review well before the feature date.
    • Most featured traffic is not your target audience, so conversion falls. Google Play weighs conversion heavily in ranking.
  • Promoted in-app purchases let a big app take over search results. 11:25
    • An Apple app can have up to 20 of them. They often show right after the app for the same keywords.
    • If your app ranks first, your in-app purchase ranks second, which pushes competitors out of view.

The more successful and popular your app is, the more interesting you are to app stores.

Chapter summaries

0:00 Why big apps skip ASO

Large apps neglect ASO because their budgets and rankings hide the gains that page work still offers.

  • Big apps see ASO as a small channel. 1:33
    • Paid acquisition is limited by budget, while ASO is capped by the number of store users in a country.
    • Big budgets make a capped channel look not worth the time.
    • Large apps often rank first for the most relevant keywords even with unoptimized metadata.
    • Their installs from organic and external sources push the rankings up on their own.
  • Modern ASO is page improvement and constant testing, not just keywords. 2:40
    • Graphic assets, text metadata, traffic channels and custom store listings can all be improved.
    • Many big companies wrongly think ASO means only keywords and text.
    • Testing new hypotheses is what brings results to apps that already seem successful.

4:26 Making the case to leadership

Managers accept ASO when it is framed in numbers and in what they already pay per install.

  • Data persuades better than explanation. 4:48
    • Numbers are key, and real data beats a verbal argument.
    • Managers ignore ASO because they already have a channel that works.
    • Steve Young asks leaders their average cost per install, then multiplies it by the extra installs.
    • A 5% gain looks huge to a big company once it is shown in money.

6:18 The overlooked lever: getting featured

Once the basics are done, a store feature is the most efficient next step for a large app.

  • Stores want to promote popular apps. 6:59
    • Users spend in the app and part of that revenue goes to the stores.
    • A feature can open new markets where success may come more easily.
    • Both Google Play and the App Store feature apps.
  • New content and localization improve the odds. 7:59
    • An update with new functionality or a new game level gives the store a reason to feature you.
    • Localize both the page metadata and the app interface into many languages.
    • Innovation and use of new store features also count in your favor.

8:33 Preparing for a feature

A feature helps only if the app holds up under the traffic and the ratings survive it.

  • Stability and ratings decide whether a feature pays off. 8:55
    • Stability affects the chance of being featured at all.
    • A slow app loses users and collects negative reviews.
    • Ratings and reviews feed straight into conversion.
    • Describe the update and why it matters in as much detail as possible when submitting it.
    • Moderation can take a long time.
    • A lower average rating and mixed reviews come with every feature, so plan for them.

11:25 Promoted in-app purchases

Promoted in-app purchases are worth more for conversion and visibility than for extra installs.

  • Their main gain for large apps is beating competitors on conversion. 11:59
    • Each one needs optimized graphics and text.
    • They are indexed by the same keywords as the app.
    • Few users scroll past the first results, so rivals stay unseen.
    • Fighting for ranking becomes a double fight for competitors.
    • Optimizing in-app purchases is a must, since each adds keywords that trigger the app.

14:07 Story features and in-app purchases in practice

Apple's story features respond to keyword changes, and in-app purchases deserve the same care.

  • A story feature starts showing for new keywords as ASO changes. 14:21
    • A client's story showed for its main keywords at first.
    • After keywords were moved and one reached number one, the story appeared for that keyword too.
    • Optimize the in-app purchase keywords and add an image to compete on tough keywords.
    • Big apps probably already have good rankings, so the gains come cheaply.

What is up app nation. It is Steve P young founder of Appmasters.com and in a part four of this YouTube series. We're going to talk all about million dollar ads and how you do ASO for them. How do you convince your leadership? How do you incorporate into your UA plans? Does it mess up. Your UA plans and with me to discuss all that and so much more is my friend all the way out in Russia, David Margarie Yon, who is the head of ASO, an amazing ASO tool that you guys have to check out.

0:32

We've done a lot of product videos on it. It is checkaso.io. David let's do this round for my friend. Hi Steve. Yeah, this is the final round and I think it will be interesting. Yeah. So let's talk all about this. All right. Usually when I hear about it's like when I'm talking to million dollar apps, I actually talked to somebody who's at a really big company and he was like, look, we don't even do ASO. And I'm like, why you don't even do ASL.

1:01

They rank really well. So when you're a million dollar app, you have a UAA strategy that already works. How do you think about ASO for these big. So, I guess many of you can think of, uh, various, you said very popular apps that are not optimized in any way in terms of ASO and cause large players pay attention to common channels to attract ad traffic. First of all, UA and market outside app stores. Um, The difference between ASR and classic user acquisition channels is that with ASO, you have a certain upper limit, try to the number of, uh, app store users in your country.

1:46

For example, uh, in case of paid user acquisition. You are limited mostly by your budgets. So successful ops, as we know, it have very, very large budgets and, um, they see ASO as, um, as a something that can bring a small number of instance and, uh, which is not worth wasting time on. And this is understandable and just Fibo in a way, um, large Epps. Are often ranked in top position by most relevant keywords, even if they haven't been optimized, their admitted data at all.

2:25

And this is you to, uh, lots of installs that come from both tours and external sources and all these, uh, improve the app rankings and moves it up. Move these apps up by keeping. Uh, today's ASO is not only about working with keyboards and text metadata, as many are used to mistakenly believe, especially in big companies. Uh, it's a huge and complex task of improving the page and consistent testing of a new hypothesis.

3:02

It is these approach that, um, that makes it possible to do. Uh, significant success even for four forever that seem to have already succeed. Um, graphic assets, uh, upgrading text metadata, a variety of traffic channels. costume sorely, leasing. Uh, just, uh, this is just a part of what you can improve regardless if your, if are, uh, regardless of your success. And, um, here's a simple example. Um, say let's imagine that you have an app that gets 1 million impressions every day and has a 5% conversion rate.

3:44

It makes a 50,000 installs a day. And if you just increased conversion only by 5%, it will be five point 25 and it will make, uh, 52. Uh, five, uh, 52,510 stools a day. And then a number will grow to a 75,000 a month and almost 1 million installs a year. So I think that's not bad at all, even for a large-scale app. So every, every business owner, every manager is interested in performance improvement and to convey the value of, so you can choose one of two.

4:26

I think, uh, the first conduct, a full-scale audit of the page and store related metrics and collect stories of your competitors success, or, uh, that have similar apps find data and statistics. You need to help to influence your manager's decision and keeping in mind that numbers are key and, uh, convincing. And true data is better than an explanation. The second thing is, uh, you can do, um, just start optimizing, if you authorize to make decisions in your.

5:08

Uh, so you can start improving. So yourself, just do the first steps, for example. And as soon as you see the progress, uh, your managers won't have any question about the necessity of ASO. So we will show the, uh, progress, uh, just doing any steps. And I think that will be. Yeah, I love what you said, David, because, you know, I did some numbers too, in a long video. Cause people are like, as working with bigger companies, they're like, how do I even justify, like you will and grew at 5%.

5:38

I'm like, you know what, 5% to you is huge. And then I said, look, here's the incremental increase in downloads. And how much are you paying for downloads? And so you can think about it. Let's say I just got you incrementally 3000 more down. A month super tiny, right? Like for a big company, maybe not that big three to 5,000, what's the average cost per install. Now multiply that by 3000 and I just saved you, you know, let's say you're used to paying two to $3 a month.

6:06

I just closed, saved you close to six to $9,000 a month. And so that's where I feel like they don't think about it because they have a channel that works. But if you just increase it by a little bit, you're actually saving a lot of. Yeah, that's true. Our David let's move on to what are the most commonly overlooked ASO elements that million dollar apps are missing. Uh, so, um, we've already mentioned that even successful and popular apps need there, so, and how to get the most progress if every major area is, uh, already well-developed and the proof.

6:41

So we will not talk here about, um, tax optimization and graphic optimization and all the, uh, basic things. So let's make sure. You've done everything. Uh, let's take a look at something that are often overlooked. Uh, even if you have a large scale. Um, getting featured is the first and most important thing in terms of efficiency. Many apps get featured by store senators as they grow in popularity and recognition. Um, getting featured, uh, can provide.

7:15

A massive increase in installs and help you assess new markets where it could be easier to succeed. Um, the more successful and popular your app is the more interesting you are to app stores. Uh, they will find it profiting. To promote you because user slack, your app and bring revenue. So a part of which will go to the stores, uh, despite these, uh, you may want to apply to get featured as it can expand your presents and provide more Guinea users, you can get.

7:49

Featured by both Google play and epilep store, uh, to give it a try, feel, fill out an application form and submitted to the store. Uh, an excellent ground for getting featured is to update your app or your game by maybe adding new functionality or new game level. And to maximize your chance of getting fishers. You may, you may want to localize. Both at page metadata and your apps interface into various languages and innovation and usage of new stores features are another advantage.

8:32

Uh, right now it can be for example, the dark stamp for, uh, epilep store apps, or maybe live ops events for Google play. Um, so to, to make the most out of getting featured, you should. Get ready for it. First of all, because app stability is the most important thing on this stage. It will affect your chances of getting featured and protect you from negative reviews. Uh, should they happen if your app is lagging? And if your are slow, you will lose users and get a lot of negative reviews and ratings in particular.

9:13

Uh, you should, uh, check if your product is technically adjusting. To a big jump, uh, in, in the server load. First of all, and your system is strong enough to meet such challenge. Uh, when you, when you got featured, uh, secondly check, if your app fits store guidelines to avoid, to avoid any trouble, you can find them in a help center of each store. And the third thing to do is submit your application, your app in an.

9:46

Uh, F moderation can take a lot of time. And if you have a measure of dead plant and you want to get featured during the time, make sure to just to submit the application long before the day, uh, and describe the sense of the update and its importance, uh, in as much details as part. The fourth important thing is a rating and reviews. Of course, if they directly affect conversion, as I said before, so along with a large number of organic traffic, getting featured has other consequences that are not always positive.

10:27

Well, the first thing, um, That, uh, that will upset you as a conversion rate because a millions of users will find your app. Most of them are not your target audience. Uh, that means that your conversion will decrease significantly. And this can, this can have very negative impact on your ranking, especially on Google play, because Google play pays a lot of attention on your conversion rate and make sure your conversion rate is high enough before featuring so.

10:59

You don't, uh, regret, uh, the consequences after for similar reasons, you may find a decreasing your average rating and not entirely positive reviews, of course. And please keep in mind that this is an integral part of any featuring, and you just should get ready for it. So that's what can I say? And. Apart from getting featured, you can pay your intention. In apps, if your app is in the epilep store, of course, because, uh, in epilepsy store you can promote your apps, which means that they can appear in the page in search results by keyboards.

11:45

Uh, you can make up to 20 apps for a single app and they like the patient needs to be optimized in terms of graphic, both and text messages. Uh, the principle advantage of, uh, of in apps for large-scale apps is not so much opportunity to advertise and make more Intel's installs, but rather an opportunity to improve conversion as quiz out competitors, because promoted in apps are very often in tests, indexed by the same keyboards as the.

12:25

And, uh, they know us often shown up in searches out, uh, immediately after the app. For example, um, if your app is, uh, is ranked first, your in-app will come second by the keyboard. So this is a huge advantage since you, you can occupy the searches out entirely and your competitors can lose a ranking. Um, Your competitors can lose ranking and stay in invisible to users and less. They scroll down less users scroll down the first apps.

13:02

So given the strong indexing and ranking of large-scale apps, these approach, um, offers a big advantage in terms of, uh, conversion rate and visibility and fighting for ranking will be a double traveled to your competitor. Uh, and which case, so have, uh, created any in-app tool that makes in a promoted data available and allows you to analyze progress. So if you can, if you want to work with your in apps, with promoted in apps in apple app store, you can go check our tool and I believe it can help you.

13:41

Um, and as for me in app store, optimizing in apps is a must. You can create. The number of keyboards, which will trigger your app to appear among the searches out, uh, taking as much space as possible in searches out, I think is crucial for, for the success, for success of any app or gaming epilepsy store. I love it. Yeah. I love it, David. So I want to hit on a couple of different things and we'll have some visuals for this, but essentially.

14:16

The getting featured such a key element. I actually wasn't even thinking about that when I was thinking about ASO, because when you get featured, especially if you have a story feature and we had a client that had a story feature, apple will incorporate those story features into your ASO. And as you adjust your ASO, your story might start showing. For some of these keywords that you started changing for. And so that's what, what happened with one of our clients is, you know, they're starting with showing up for their main keywords.

14:42

And then we started moving some keywords around, got them to eventually be number one for a certain keyword. And then that keyword. Is now that story, the apple, the apple feature is not showing up for that new keyword. And so if you start adjusting it, you'll start showing up your apple story will start showing up for these different keywords as you start adjusting for that as well. And then lastly, that inaction. Is huge.

15:05

And we, there are, so you definitely have to do it because you're probably going to get feet. You probably have good rankings anyways, good ending scene. And you can get for some competitive keywords. So really go through that in app purchase optimization, have some good keywords in there. Definitely have an image in there as well. David, this has been absolutely amazing guys. If you're looking for an ASO tool, go. To this particular website, check aso.io, check aso.io.

15:36

It will teach you from the very start from this YouTube series from part one. If you just are now all the way to you, if you're ready to scale to the million dollar. Abs and for you million dollar apps, the favorite tool that I have David mentioned, this is you can see which one of your competitors are get their in-app purchases, which in app purchases are getting index and which in-app purchases are dominating certain keywords.
