In short

Upwork served as a low-cost hiring channel for app founders in one source. One founder used 10 to 12 contractors, including a 40-hour-a-week dev and a support person at about $5 an hour, while another reportedly caps each iOS app near $2,000 by pricing 3 to 5 parts separately. Lesson: hire part-time help early and price builds by feature to control costs.

What was said about Upwork

  • Hire part-time Upwork contractors early, before you are profitable. Dmitri used Upwork contractors for email sequences, SEO, ad management, design, Webflow and customer support, most working only a couple of hours a week. At one point he had 10 to 12 contractors, including a dev at 40 hours a week and a support person paid about $5 an hour.

He said: "I found it much easier to scale by having people to help out." Having helpers made scaling easier than doing everything himself.

  • Cap outsourced app builds by pricing each feature part separately. Another founder splits each iOS app into 3 to 5 parts, prices each one (for example $500, $1,000, $200) and sets a hard cap of about $2,000 per app. He reportedly never pays more than that, hiring from Upwork each time.

Using ChatGPT to estimate feature complexity helps benchmark costs and avoid bloat from devs who say a task is taking longer. The core feature is often the cheapest part, while onboarding is the most labor intensive.
